PASIFIKA WAYFINDERS
The Pasifika Roundtable brought to light a pressing concern: the availability of support for youth and family practitioners. Recognizing this issue's significance, Lesa Debra, a seasoned youth worker with over two decades of experience, initiated discussions with community members to create a safe space for practitioners to learn, connect, enhance their practices, and find new ways to uplift and serve their community.
With support from the Victoria Multicultural Commission (VMC) through the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing, the Pasifika Wayfinders Fono series was launched. Over the past five months, we have facilitated five fono, collaborating with Sam Brown (co-founder of Blank Canvas), Anasina Grey-Barberio (founder of Engage Pasefika), and Agnes Fanene. These fono covered critical topics such as youth justice, family domestic violence, education, mental health/well-being, and youth culture. Each session featured exceptional guest speakers and panelists who shared their experiences and expertise, sparking insightful discussions and learning opportunities. These sessions also challenged us to continuously find better ways to support our Pasifika community within our respective fields.
The Fono series highlighted a well-known need: ongoing support for practitioners, particularly understanding the specific types of support they require. This project is a passion for Lesa Debra, who emphasized that the conclusion of the Fono series does not mark the end of Wayfinders. As she stated, "the Fono series may be over, but Wayfinders continues"—so stay tuned.
